  New York's highest court on Thursday rejected President-elect Donald Trump's bid to halt his sentencing Friday, and prosecutors urged the U.S.

The New York Court of Appeals has denied former President Donald Trump's attempt to dismiss a case against him, where he was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. This decision upholds a previous ruling that Trump must pay $5 million in damages. The case stems from an incident in the 1990s, with Trump's appeal focusing on the argument that the Adult Survivors Act, under which Carroll filed her lawsuit, was unconstitutional. With this latest rejection, Trump's only remaining legal recourse is an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Meanwhile, another defamation lawsuit by Carroll against Trump, seeking $10 million, is set for trial in January.
