  • The anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal has dismissed a complaint alleging corruption against former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud for being outside its jurisdiction. The Lokpal stated that a sitting judge or the CJI does not fall under its purview as defined by the Lokpal Act.

The Lokpal, India's anti-corruption ombudsman, has dismissed a complaint of corruption against former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, stating that it lacks jurisdiction over retired judges. The complaint, filed by the NGO 'Centre for Public Interest Litigation', accused Gogoi of corruption related to his appointment to the Rajya Sabha. The Lokpal noted that while it can investigate serving judges, it does not have the authority to probe allegations against judges who have retired. This decision was made despite the complainant's argument that the alleged corruption occurred during Gogoi's tenure as CJI. The case highlights the limitations of the Lokpal's powers concerning retired public officials.
