  • Liz Kendall has faced calls from Labour MPs to reconsider the Government's decision not to award financial compensation to women affected by state pension age reforms. Brian Leishman (Alloa and Grangemouth) told the Work and Pensions Secretary that he was "appalled" by the rejection of an independent ombudsman's suggestion to provide financial redress.
The article discusses the backlash faced by UK Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride following his decision not to provide compensation to women affected by changes to the state pension age, known as the WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaign. MPs from various parties have criticized Stride, urging him to reconsider his stance. The criticism stems from the perceived injustice towards approximately 3.8 million women born in the 1950s, who were not adequately informed about the pension age increase from 60 to 65, and later to 66. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman had recommended compensation, but Stride's refusal has led to accusations of ignoring the ombudsman's findings and calls for a debate in Parliament to address the issue. The WASPI campaign continues to push for fair compensation, highlighting the financial and emotional distress caused by the sudden changes in pension age.
