TikTok filed an emergency application on Monday imploring the Supreme Court to temporarily block a law that would effectively ban the popular social media app. Under bipartisan legislation signed into law by President Joe Biden in April,

TikTok has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in a looming ban, arguing that the legislation forcing its parent company, ByteDance, to divest its U.S. operations or face a ban violates the First Amendment rights of its 170 million American users. The company contends that the law, which was signed by President Joe Biden in April, is not feasible as it would require a complete separation of its recommendation engine, a task it claims is technologically impossible within the stipulated timeframe. TikTok has already lost in lower courts, with both a federal judge and an appeals court upholding the law. The company is now seeking an emergency stay from the Supreme Court to prevent the ban from taking effect, highlighting the potential economic and expressive impacts on users and businesses. The Justice Department has until June 20 to respond to TikTok's request.
