West Africa regional bloc approves exit timeline for 3 coup-hit member states
- West Africa's regional bloc ECOWAS approved Sunday an exit timeline for three coup-hit nations after a nearly yearlong process of mediation to avert the unprecedented disintegration of the grouping. In a first in the 15-nation bloc's nearly 50 years of existence,
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved a timeline for the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, following their decision to leave the bloc after coups in these countries. This decision was made during an extraordinary summit in Abuja, Nigeria, where leaders also discussed the political situation in Senegal and the broader implications of the exits. The withdrawal process, which was initially announced by the juntas of these nations, will take a year as per the ECOWAS treaty, despite the juntas' desire for an immediate exit. The summit also addressed the need for dialogue to resolve political tensions and ensure stability in the region, with specific attention to the upcoming elections in Senegal and the potential for military intervention in Niger.
