Ontario spent highest-ever amount on government ads, auditor says

The article from CP24 reports that Ontario's Auditor General, Bonnie Lysyk, revealed that the province spent a record-breaking $36.7 million on government advertising in the fiscal year 2023-2024. This amount is significantly higher than previous years, with the previous high being $27.5 million in 2018-2019. The increase in spending was attributed to campaigns promoting various government initiatives, including healthcare, education, and economic recovery efforts post-COVID-19. Lysyk noted that while some of the advertising was informative, a considerable portion was deemed partisan, potentially breaching guidelines that prohibit government ads from being used for political gain. The report has sparked concerns about the use of public funds for what critics argue could be seen as taxpayer-funded political advertising, especially with an upcoming election.
