Taiwan's President Lai in Hawaii after declaring Taiwan a force for global peace
- By Angie Teo, Ann Wang and David Brunnstrom (Reuters) -Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te began a two-day U.S. stopover in Hawaii on Saturday as part of a Pacific tour after declaring his democratically governed island a key force for promoting global peace and stability.
Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, during a stopover in Hawaii on his way to Paraguay, emphasized Taiwan's role as a "force for global peace" in a speech to the Taiwanese community in Honolulu. This visit, which included a meeting with U.S. officials, comes at a time of heightened tensions with China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory. President Lai's comments and the U.S. engagement with him are seen as a reaffirmation of support for Taiwan, despite the lack of formal diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the U.S. His transit through the U.S. has been closely watched by Beijing, which has criticized such interactions as violations of the one-China principle. The visit underscores the delicate balance of unofficial relations between Taiwan and the U.S., amidst ongoing geopolitical frictions.
