EDMONTON, July 23 /CNW/ - Matrikon Inc. (TSX:MTK) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a US$4.3 million contract to implement the first stage of a major United States electricity producer's North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) cyber security initiative. The project involves the design and installation of network architecture and supporting infrastructure to support full compliance initiatives at 11 generation facilities. The project is expected to be completed in early 2010. "This new network will drive our client's cyber security initiative by providing a consistent and robust infrastructure upon which they can build a fleet-wide NERC CIP compliance program," said Rick Kaun, director of Matrikon's Industrial Security & Compliance group. NERC has set Critical Infrastructure Protection standards to ensure power companies protect themselves from cyber attacks. Power producers are particularly susceptible to these threats because of the potential for massive public disturbances that a security breach could cause. Companies across North America are at various stages of updating their networks and systems to comply with the standard and safeguard against these threats. Matrikon is one of 12 voting members on NERC's Control Systems Security Working Group, the body responsible for setting and interpreting the industry guidelines on cyber security. Matrikon has the expertise and proven experience to assist companies in achieving compliance and avoiding penalties for non-compliance. President & CEO Nizar J. Somji commented on Matrikon's selection for this project: "Matrikon has over 20 years experience working with and understanding the unique challenges of the process control environment. We have also been designing and implementing network infrastructure to support plant floor solutions for over 10 years. With this combination, we have unique perspective that spans both process control and IT considerations. Coupled with our intimacy with the standard and its interpretation, Matrikon is the ideal, if not only, choice for this type of work."
