  • When the bell finally rang for a general election, candidates across party lines and of all ages were preparing to enter or perhaps re-enter into the political arena. The Irish Independent spoke with some of them.

The article from The Independent discusses the youngest and oldest candidates in Ireland's 2024 local elections. The youngest candidate, 18-year-old Jack Murray from Fianna Fáil, is running in the Balbriggan area of Fingal. Despite his youth, Murray has been involved in politics since he was 15, driven by a desire to represent his generation and address local issues like housing and transport. On the other end of the spectrum, 80-year-old Michael O'Dowd, a former Fine Gael councillor, is running independently in Dundalk. O'Dowd, who has been in politics for over 50 years, is motivated by a commitment to public service and a desire to continue contributing to his community, despite his age. Both candidates highlight the diverse age range and motivations of those participating in the local elections, showcasing a blend of youthful enthusiasm and seasoned experience.
