LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - November 28, 2008) -

WHAT: First compressed natural gas (CNG)-fueled trucks in port drayage operation at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles will launch into service as part of a 12-month demonstration. The CNG trucks are expected to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions -- a precursor to smog -- by 80 percent, when compared with the cleanest diesel vehicles and reduce fuel costs by about $3,500 annually per truck. The truck engines are certified to meet the U.S. EPA's stringent 2010 on-road emission standards. Four heavy-duty clean-fuel trucks will transport containers off-loaded from ships to nearby freight-consolidation yards. About two-thirds of the 15 million container units transported annually through the San Pedro Bay ports are moved by truck within 25 miles of the docks. WHEN: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008 WHERE: Clean Truck Center Pier S Avenue and New Dock Street, Terminal Island 3593 New Dock St., San Pedro, CA 90731 WHY: To help reduce air pollution from trucks at the ports and in the surrounding communities, as well as cut fuel costs for truck drivers at the busiest container seaports in the United States.
