Justice Department sues Illinois and Chicago over immigration laws

The Department of Justice is suing Illinois and Chicago over their immigration laws, claiming they endanger public safety and conflict with federal statutes.
The Justice Department has filed lawsuits against the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago, alleging that their immigration laws obstruct federal immigration enforcement. Specifically, the lawsuits target Illinois' Trust Act, which limits local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration authorities, and Chicago's "Welcoming City" ordinance, which similarly restricts the city's cooperation with immigration enforcement efforts. The federal government argues that these local and state policies interfere with the ability of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to perform their duties, particularly in detaining and deporting undocumented immigrants. The lawsuits seek to have these laws declared invalid, asserting that they conflict with federal immigration law and the supremacy clause of the U.S. Constitution.
