US top diplomat Rubio will not attend G20 meeting in South Africa
- U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not attend an upcoming G20 meeting in South Africa, the top U.S. diplomat said on Wednesday, days after President Donald Trumpthreatened to cut off funding to the African country.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Vice President Kamala Harris will not attend the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in February 2025, as they are focusing on domestic priorities ahead of the U.S. presidential election. Instead, the U.S. will be represented by Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell. Additionally, Senator Marco Rubio, who was considered for the role of U.S. sherpa at the G20, has decided not to attend, citing scheduling conflicts. This decision reflects the U.S. administration's strategy to prioritize domestic issues during an election year while still maintaining engagement in international forums.
