President-elect Donald Trump abruptly rejected a bipartisan plan Wednesday to prevent a Christmastime government shutdown.

The bipartisan plan to fund the government and avert a shutdown has collapsed due to new demands from former President Donald Trump. Just days before the deadline, Trump has urged House Republicans to hold out for more conservative policies, including stricter border security measures. This has led to the disintegration of a previously agreed-upon deal between House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The demands include significant changes to immigration policy, which are unlikely to pass in the Democrat-controlled Senate. As a result, with the government funding deadline looming, there is increased uncertainty and a higher risk of a government shutdown, which could disrupt federal services and leave many federal employees without pay.
