  • Both the Bloc Qu

  • cois and the NDP have said they are not willing to support the government's latest affordability measures if the $250 rebate is not expanded to include retirees. The New Democrats said they would be willing to pass the GST/HST tax break on its own.

The article from the National Post discusses a proposal by Liberal MPs to expand the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) to include retirees. Currently, the CERB provides $2,000 a month to workers who have lost their income due to the COVID-19 crisis, but retirees are not eligible for this benefit. Liberal MPs, including Sameer Zuberi and Ryan Turnbull, have suggested that retirees, particularly those who have returned to work to supplement their pensions, should also receive a one-time payment of $250, similar to what is being offered to students. This proposal comes in response to concerns that many seniors are facing financial difficulties due to the economic downturn caused by the virus, with some even returning to the workforce. The MPs argue that this measure would help alleviate the financial strain on seniors, many of whom are living on fixed incomes and are particularly vulnerable during this economic crisis.
