  • Saying their constituents cannot afford to pay more for electricity, legislators are urging New Jersey Board of Public Utilities President Christine Guhl-Sadovy to reject Atlantic City Electric's latest request for an 8% rate hike.

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has approved a rate hike for Atlantic City Electric (ACE) customers, effective from June 1, 2024. This decision will increase the average residential customer's monthly bill by approximately $5.47, or 4.8%, to cover infrastructure improvements and operational costs. The rate increase aims to fund upgrades to the electric grid for better reliability and resilience, as well as to support energy efficiency programs. Despite opposition from some consumer advocates and the Division of Rate Counsel, who argued that the increase was too high, the NJBPU approved the hike to ensure continued service quality and safety. ACE, serving over 565,000 customers in southern New Jersey, has committed to using the additional revenue to enhance customer service and invest in clean energy initiatives.
