A 29-year-old political candidate named Fernando Villavicencio, who was running for president in Ecuador, was assassinated on August 9, 2023, after a campaign event in Quito. Villavicencio, known for his outspoken criticism of corruption and organized crime, was shot multiple times as he left the event, and the attack also injured nine others. The suspected assassin was killed by security forces at the scene, and six others were arrested in connection with the killing. Villavicencio's death has shocked the nation and raised concerns about the safety of political figures and the influence of criminal organizations in Ecuador, prompting President Guillermo Lasso to declare a state of emergency and seek FBI assistance in the investigation.
