Fact check: Mike Johnson claims only about 1% of federal employees work in the office
- Speaker Mike Johnson's claim seems to reference a survey by a news outlet that says it was not scientific and shouldn't be used to draw conclusions.
The article from the Houston Chronicle discusses a claim made by Republican U.S. Rep. Chip Roy about the number of federal employees. Roy suggested that there are 2 million federal employees, a figure he used to argue for reducing the size of the federal government. However, Politifact rated this claim as "Mostly False." The actual number of federal employees, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, was about 2.8 million as of 2022, but this includes both civilian and military personnel. When focusing solely on civilian federal employees, the number drops to around 2.1 million, which still does not align perfectly with Roy's claim. Furthermore, the article points out that the number of federal employees has been relatively stable over the past decade, with slight fluctuations, and that Roy's figure did not account for the nuances in federal employment statistics, including part-time, temporary, and postal service workers.
