The European Union has decided to extend the mandate of Operation Aspides, a naval mission aimed at safeguarding maritime navigation in the Red Sea, for another year. This decision comes in response to ongoing threats from Yemen's Houthi rebels, who have been attacking commercial shipping in the region. The operation, which began in February 2024, involves European warships and airborne early warning systems to protect vessels from drone and missile attacks. The extension reflects the EU's commitment to ensuring the safety of one of the world's most critical maritime corridors, which is vital for global trade, particularly for the transport of oil and goods between Europe and Asia.
