  • Winter weather and citywide water outage coupled with special elections that could potentially flip control of the Virginia statehouse have set state lawmakers up for an unusual start to this year's General Assembly session.

The start of Virginia's General Assembly session was delayed due to a significant water outage in Richmond, caused by a break in a 36-inch water main. This incident led to low water pressure and a boil water advisory across the city, affecting the planned activities at the Virginia State Capitol. The session, which was set to begin with the swearing-in of new members and the election of House and Senate leaders, had to be postponed. The water main break occurred on a Friday, and although repairs were completed by Saturday, the city needed time to ensure water safety, thus pushing back the legislative session's start.
