Ken-Betwa River Link Project: What's It All About? Cost, Timeline, Details

The Ken-Betwa River Link Project is a significant initiative aimed at transferring surplus water from the Ken River to the Betwa River to address water scarcity in the Bundelkhand region, spanning Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. This project, part of India's broader National Perspective Plan for interlinking rivers, involves constructing a 230 km canal, a 77-meter high dam, and a 2,000 MW hydroelectric power plant. The project, which has been in discussion since 1982, was recently approved with a total cost of Rs 44,605 crore, with funding split between the central government, the states involved, and a loan from the Asian Development Bank. It promises to irrigate 10.6 lakh hectares of land, provide drinking water to 62 lakh people, and generate 1,030 MW of hydropower, alongside 27 MW from solar power. However, it has faced criticism for its environmental impact, particularly the submergence of parts of the Panna Tiger Reserve, leading to concerns about wildlife displacement and habitat loss. The project's timeline has been extended, with completion now expected by 2028.
