In a letter to the Department of Commerce, Scott highlighted that Chinese garlic is often grown in heavily polluted areas using raw human sewage as fertilizer, which poses significant health risks. Additionally, he raised alarms about the possibility that this garlic could be produced with forced labor, particularly from regions like Xinjiang, where there have been reports of human rights abuses.
