The Government Committee of the officially nonpartisan Legislature advanced both winner-take-all proposals Monday along party lines.

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen's advocacy for a winner-take-all system in the state's Electoral College vote allocation has led to significant legislative movement. On March 1, 2023, two bills, LB 764 and LB 765, which aim to change Nebraska's current system of splitting its electoral votes to a winner-take-all approach, advanced from the Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. This shift would align Nebraska with most other states, where all electoral votes go to the candidate who wins the state's popular vote. The proposals have stirred debate, with critics arguing that the change could disadvantage Democrats in national elections, while supporters believe it would simplify the process and reflect the state's overall preference more accurately. The bills now move to the full legislature for further consideration.
