  • Serbia's secret service and police have been spying on journalists and opposition activists by installing a spyware on their mobile phones, Amnesty International said Monday.

Amnesty International has accused the Serbian government of illegally spying on political opponents, journalists, and activists, according to a report released on June 13, 2023. The report details how the Serbian Security Information Agency (BIA) has been involved in widespread surveillance, including the use of sophisticated spyware like Pegasus, to monitor and suppress dissent. This surveillance has targeted individuals critical of the government, including those involved in protests against President Aleksandar Vučić and his administration. Amnesty International's findings suggest that these actions violate both Serbian law and international human rights standards, with the government's actions described as an attempt to stifle free speech and political opposition. The report calls for an immediate halt to such surveillance practices and for accountability for those involved in these illegal activities.
